PAHO Reports Low Mortality From Dengue Cases in Latin America and the Caribbean

Experts consider that the increase in cases is related to the territorial expansion of the mosquito Aedes aegypti, its main vector, favored by climate change and phenomena such as El Niño.
The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) reported that in Latin America and the Caribbean, with more than 9.3 million dengue cases so far in 2024, the case fatality rate remains below the regional target of 0.05 percent.

PAHO Director Jarbas Barbosa stated that «Although we note a notable increase in the number of dengue cases in the region this year, it is important to note that the proportion of cases that evolve to death remains low thanks to the efforts of the countries and the support of PAHO».
Barbosa said that “this situation highlights the importance of maintaining surveillance, strengthening prevention and control measures, and ensuring timely medical care”.
According to the latest epidemiological update, so far, the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean reported more than 9,500 cases of severe dengue (0.10 percent) and about 4,500 deaths (rate of 0.048 percent).
Experts consider that the increase in cases is related to the territorial expansion of the mosquito Aedes aegypti, its main vector, whose appearance in unprecedented regions is favored by climate change and phenomena such as El Niño.
In addition, population growth and urban expansion to unattended areas with poor water and sanitation services have affected the proliferation of the mosquito.
Faced with the increase in diseases transmitted by the Aedes Aegypti mosquito, the world body urges countries to redouble their efforts to detect, prevent and treat cases.
